Back To Basics: The Future Of Phones

Just a week ago we had our first look at the new Palm phone. It is designed and market to be a secondary device that lets you separate from your primary mobile device while still maintaining most if not all the features that you’d need. Its designed to be a lifestyle device, it’s a phone that is designed to let you live your life… Well here is another phone in the same category that was brought to our attention, and well I like it too.

Introducing the Light Phone 2. As described by the Light the Light Phone 2 is a simple 4G phone that has an E-ink display that has messaging and other essential tools. You read that right, its a phone with a complete E-ink display.

Light says that the Light Phone 2 is the phone that respects you. It does this by allowing you to leave your main phone and going to a device that has fewer distractions, this frees you to live your life and its what the company calls going Light.

If you choose to “go Light” what you’ll be getting is a phone with a basic black and white E-ink display.  E-ink is a good choice as its easy to read in bright daylight, it’s easy to backlight for darker environments and it is extremely power efficient when text is static. As for apps, the Light Phone 2 will ship with a messaging app, alarm clock, contacts, and auto-reply. However, after meeting their stretch goals the phone will likely also include, navigation, ride-sharing apps, calculator, playlist, weather, and Bluetooth.

Overall I appreciate the idea behind the Light Phone 2 and I’m considering one as a secondary device. I think the idea is novel and maybe the best way separate from the blitz of data I get from my Flagship device. Light is marketing the Light Phone 2 as just the right amount of content.

Overall all there are a few things that concern me, the first is this phone is using the date Qualcomm Snapdragon wear 2100 (Older version of the processor found in most Wear OS smartwatches). The 3100 series was announced about a month ago and while it isn’t substantially more powerful it is more efficient. Efficiency is the key in a mobile device, so this may or may not be a problem. The second is unlike palm which worked with Verizon to mirror your main phone line, Light is selling globally without a sim card.  You should be able to take any sim card and get the Light Phone 2 up and running but as a second phone line.  If you’re interested in checking out the Light Phone 2 here on Indiegogo where you can get $100 off, orders are scheduled to ship in April 2019.
